초록Abstract

Using Netflix weekly Top 10 charts across 94 countries from 2022 to 2025, this paper documents a structural shift in how television titles persist on global popularity charts: the long tail of series longevity is shrinking, so the chart life of series increasingly resembles the fast decay long associated with films. The finding speaks to windowing strategy, content investment, and the economics of attention on global streaming platforms.

Overview

Series once outlived films on streaming charts by design — episodic release sustained attention over weeks. Tracking every title that entered Netflix’s weekly Top 10 in 94 countries between 2022 and 2025, this study shows that advantage eroding: the persistence tail of series is contracting toward the short, front-loaded decay pattern of films, with implications for how platforms commission, release, and monetize serial content.
