Platform-Driven Drift: Smartphone Passivization, Media Displacement, and Affective Well-Being

초록Abstract

Even after smartphone saturation, the composition of use continues to shift. This study conceptualizes the platform-driven move toward passive smartphone use as 'platform-driven drift' and examines its links to media displacement and affective well-being. Using 2010-2024 time-diary panel data from the Korea Media Panel Survey with fixed-effects models and Callaway-Sant'Anna difference-in-differences, it documents structural passivization in which passive use rises far faster than active use within the same device, associated declines in television viewing, active PC use, and print consumption, and a link between passive use and higher negative affect that turns positive among older adults.
